Omnidirectional underwater surveying and telepresence
Exploratory dives are traditionally the first step for marine scientists to
acquire information on a previously unknown area of scientific interest. Manned
submersibles have been the platform of choice for such exploration, as they allow
a high level of environmental perception by the scientist on-board, and the ability
to take informed decisions on what to explore next. However, manned submersibles
have extremely high operation costs and provide very limited bottom time. Remotely
operated vehicles (ROVs) can partially address these two issues, but have operational
and cost constraints that restrict their usage.
This paper discusses new capabilities to assist scientists operating lightweight hybrid
remotely operated vehicles (HROV) in exploratory missions of mapping and
surveying. The new capabilities, under development within the Spanish National
project OMNIUS, provide a new layer of autonomy for HROVs by exploring three key
concepts: Omni-directional optical sensing for collaborative immersive exploration,
Proximity safety awareness and Online mapping during mission time.Peer Reviewe
Mapping 123 million neonatal, infant and child deaths between 2000 and 2017
Since 2000, many countries have achieved considerable success in improving child survival, but localized progress remains unclear. To inform efforts towards United Nations Sustainable Development Goal 3.2—to end preventable child deaths by 2030—we need consistently estimated data at the subnational level regarding child mortality rates and trends. Here we quantified, for the period 2000–2017, the subnational variation in mortality rates and number of deaths of neonates, infants and children under 5 years of age within 99 low- and middle-income countries using a geostatistical survival model. We estimated that 32% of children under 5 in these countries lived in districts that had attained rates of 25 or fewer child deaths per 1,000 live births by 2017, and that 58% of child deaths between 2000 and 2017 in these countries could have been averted in the absence of geographical inequality. This study enables the identification of high-mortality clusters, patterns of progress and geographical inequalities to inform appropriate investments and implementations that will help to improve the health of all populations
Computer vision techniques for early detection of skin cancer
This thesis investigates the problem of developing new computer vision techniques for early detection of skin cancer. The first part of this work presents a novel methodology to correct color reproduction in dermatological images when different cameras and/or dermoscopes are used. Next, the problem of automatic full body mapping is addressed by proposing a mosaicing method based on an on-the-shelf digital compact camera and a set of markers. This method increases the possibilities of total body photography by taking the low-resolution images of a whole body exploration and automatically combining them into a high-resolution photomosaic. The third contribution of this work consists of the development of a full body scanner for acquiring cutaneous images. On one hand, the scanner reduces the long time-consuming examinations done in dermoscopy explorations, and on the other hand, it increases the resolution of total body photography systems.En aquesta tesi s'investiga el desenvolupament de noves tècniques de visió per computador per a la detecció del cà ncer de pell. La primera part del treball presenta una nova metodologia per a la correcció del color en imatges dermatològiques quan s'utilitzen diferents cà meres i/o els dermatoscops.
A continuació és proposa una solució al problema del registre automà tic d'imatges de cos complert amb la proposta d’un mètode de mosaicing basat en l'ús de cà meres compactes i un conjunt de markers. Incrementant les possibilitats de la fotografia de cos complert mitjançant la combinació automà tica d’imatges de baixa resuloció per a l'obtenció d'un fotomosaic d’alta resolució. La tercera contribució d'aquest treball consisteix en el desenvolupament d'un escà ner de cos complert per a l'adquisició d'imatges cutà nies. D'una banda l'escà ner redueix el llarg temps necessari per a les exploracions dermatoscòpiques, i de l'altre, incrementa la resolució de la fotografia de cos complet
